 As the web hosting industry evolves, so do the types of web hosting offered. They range from shared hosting (also called virtual hosting), where clients have accounts on servers shared with other clients, to dedicated hosting, where clients have sole use of entire servers. Beyond dedicated hosting is colocation, where users place their own servers in a datacenter and are responsible for the servers themselves.

Between the above types of web hosting are reseller hosting (clients can resell web space to their clients, using accounts on shared servers) and VPS hosting (clients have part of a server that's partitioned off from other accounts).

Web hosting is offered on Linux/Unix or Windows servers, which gives us the industry terms Linux hosting and Windows hosting.
In addition, there are specialty types of web hosting (application-specific hosting), where the web host tailors the service for specific needs, such as clustered hosting and file hosting.
