Survey Examines Social Site Use

(The Hosting News) – A new survey released by the Pew Research Center shows some interesting results about users of online social site networking sites.

To get their results, Pew surveyed over 2,000 adult participants.
Overall, Pew found that 32% of social site users are between the ages of 23 and 35, 16% are between 18 and 22, 26% are between 36 and 39, while 6% are users 65 and up.

As for as the social sites used, 92% of users have a Facebook, 29% have MySpace, 18% have a LinkedIn, while 13% use Twitter.

Since Facebook accounted for such a high percentage, the survey’s results on Facebook were particularly interesting.

Participants were asked whether they felt that most people could be trusted. Pew found that regular Facebook users are 43% more trusting than non-users.

They survey also showed Facebook users have closer relationships, are more social than others, and are more politically engaged. Also, the average Facebook user has 229 friends.

Some had previously contended that the use of online social networking had the opposite effect of making people less social in real life.

As far as how Facebook users were connected, the poll found 22% were acquaintances from high school, 12% family members, 10% coworkers, and 9% went to college together.

Every industry has its own set of jargons and acronyms that they frequently use.
If you are new to internet surfing you will have a hard time knowing what they mean or you will waste your time researching for their meaning.
The way to start a conversation in the right footing is if you understand each other quite well and for the people conversing, knowing what the other person is talking about.
The use of slangs and jargons on the internet can result in confusion even if at times it can be funny.
It is easier to explain one if there are two people exchanging ideas, but when a group does the exchange of ideas it becomes another story.
If several people could not agree because of a misunderstanding, what happens next is something that you do not wish to happen since it can lead to a disaster of small proportions.

Jargons/Slangs Commonly Used For Websites

•           Usability. How visitors can easily use your site.

•           Landing page. The first thing that your online visitor sees when he visits the ads on your web site

•           Cloaking. A form of deception since what you place in a search engine is not the content that is seen when people visit your site.

•           Cloud computing. A network of computers which analyses where CPU and RAM are available. This assures the person that the resources found in his computer are fully utilized.

Jargons Use For Search Engine Marketing

•           SEM (Search Engine Marketing). The normal practice of the use of search engines to bring visitors to your site.

•           Local Search. Web search made if you are looking for a business within a specific city..

•           SEO (Search Engine Optimization). How you make your website found when you make use of search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo.

•           Black Hat SEO. A set of techniques that are against the major search engine guidelines found on the net.  These techniques can get your site banned or deindexed from the search engines if found out about.

•           Blogger. The author of the blog.  Could be several bloggers on one blog.

•           RSS Feeds. A regularly published news feed.  People can subscribe to these via an RSS reader.

•           Influencer. Somebody who has the ability to persuade others.

•           Social Bookmarking. Saving your web content using a web based service so that you can share it with others.

•           Tags. Similar to Keywords, something which can help people look for something easily.

•           Tweets. A person’s update using the social network Twitter.

•           Retweet.  To post someone else’s tweet on your Twitter profile.

•           Likes.  Used by Facebook to “like” a particular website.

Jargon Used for Measurement

•           Hit. A file request from a web server.

•           Bounce Rate. The number of individuals who visited your site and leave without going to any of your web pages.  For instance, just clicking on your website and then closing out would be a “bounce”.  Often referred as useless traffic.

Some Common Abbreviations Use When Conversing On the Internet
•           LMAO. Laughing My Ass off.

•           LOL. Laughing Out Loud (or laugh out loud).

•           ASL. Age, Sex and Location.

•           BRB. Be Right Back.

•           IIRC. If I Recall or If I Remember.

1) Never get your domain registration from your web host. Even if it's free.

you get into a dispute with your web host and they also administer your domain registration, the web host will in all likelihood lock you out from your domains until the dispute is settled. If you have a separate registrar for your domain registrations and you get into a dispute with your web host, you can simply sign up with another web host and point your domains to their new home with little downtime. It's insurance. Well worth the couple of extra bucks a year.

2) Renew your domains before they expire.

The recommended policy is to renew your domains one month before they expire. Then, if there are any problems to iron out, you have the time to get them fixed without having to be pressurized by looming renewal and redemption dates, unresponsive registrars, etc.

3) Do your research. Read the registrar's ToS before signing up.

All registrars are not made equal. Before deciding on a registrar, you should do your research on each prospective registrar by reading forums like this one at WHT, googling for "registrars-name complaints," and by reading (and understanding) the registrar's ToS. Try them out with one domain to get the feel of how you like the control panel, checkout, etc.

4) Never do a chargeback with domains in your account.

5) Don't use emails for support. Always use the registrar's ticketing system.

Emails are an unreliable form of communication with your registrar. They are easy to ignore or to get lost. Some registrars hardly ever respond to emails. Look for the registrar's ticketing system and use that instead as a direct means of communicating with your registrar. It's usually found somewhere in their help system. Expect turnaround time to be 24-48 hours and longer over a weekend or holiday. Be polite and as clear and concise as possible.

6) Be wary of deeply discounted domain registrations. There's always a catch.

It costs registrars $7.06 for .com domain registrations. Anything under $7.06 has a high risk factor. That's a whopping $0.50 for their overhead, administration, and profit.

•           MS Blaster: This virus spread through Windows operating systems, specifically targeting the Windows update services.

•           MyDoom: This virus quickly spread by purportedly sending an email message with an attachment that when opened will send email copies of the virus to those who are listed in the victim’s address book.

A domain name is worth what someone will pay for it. A domain that looks valuable on paper is worth what it appears to be worth only if someone is willing to pay that amount for it. On the other hand, a domain that doesn't look valuable at all may be valuable to someone who is willing to pay a lot for that domain. The value of a domain is what it's worth to someone else, and that value is often dependent on the revenue that the domain can help generate.
While no one can assign an exact value to a domain until someone has paid for it, the following criteria are commonly used to determine a domain's general worth. Having a combination of positive factors usually increases a domain's value.

Domain length

Domain keywords

While one-word domains are extremely popular, domains with two words, possibly even three words, can still be valuable if those words together have commercial value. Keywords relevant to an emerging product or trend give the domain increased value.

Hyphens and numbers

Hyphens in domains reduce their value. The hyphen is often forgotten and people go to the non-hyphenated version of the domain instead. Also, anyone can take a two-word domain, insert a hyphen between the words, and register it as a new domain. That doesn't make it a valuable domain.
Domains with numbers are generally less valuable too. As above, anyone can take an existing domain, add a number or two to it, and register it as a new domain. It can look like a cheaper version of the original domain. Also, when hearing a domain with a number in it, listeners don't know whether to write the domain as a number (e.g. "2") or as a word ("two" or "to"). In cases where the numbers add meaning to the domain, such as a relevant year, they're less likely to detract from the domain's value.

Domain history

Was the domain previously used for a popular, reputable site? The domain value goes up. Was it used for a site with questionable content, or was it used to send spam? The value goes considerably down.

Keyword competition

Keyword competition is the number of web pages that are optimized for or that appear in search results for a particular keyword. For example, "web host" has about 9,950,000 results in Google with quotation marks and about 28,100,000 results without quotation marks. The keyword competition is very high for this keyword. More specific keywords have less competition. Example: "Australia ecommerce web host" has only one result with quotation marks and about 272,000 results without them.

Keyword density

Keyword density refers to how often a keyword is used relative to the rest of the text on the page. A 500-word page with a keyword used five times, for example, will have a higher keyword density than a 1200-word page with a keyword used 10 times. Keyword density is often expressed as the ratio of the keyword to the total number of words on the page.
A higher keyword density is not always better. Search engines may label a page with a very high keyword density as having keyword stuffing instead.

Keyword frequency

Keyword frequency is similar to keyword density except that it refers to the frequency (number of times) that a keyword is used on this page. For example, the word keyword is used very frequently on this page (but because of the word's keyword popularity, this page is not likely to appear early in search results for just the word keyword).
Keyword frequency is one of the factors that search engines use to determine a page's relevancy for that keyword. Be careful to avoid keyword stuffing, however.

Keyword matching

Keyword matching is how keywords that advertisers bid on interact with search queries. There are four types of keyword matching:
  • Broad match: your ad can appear with search results for one or more words in the query as well as for singular/plural forms, synonyms, other relevant variations, and for the words in a different order. For example, if you bid on a broad match for domain names, your ad could appear with search result for domain names, domain name, name domain, and domain, among other variations. A broad match is the default option.
  • Phrase match: your ad can appear with search results for your term in quotation marks. For example, "domain names" could appear with domain names and .in domain names but not for domain name or domain .in names.
  • Exact match: your ad can appear only with results for the exact keyword or keyword phrase that you indicate with brackets around it. Example: [domain names] could appear only with results for domain names, not for any of the other examples listed in this section.
  • Negative keyword: your ad will not appear with search results that include terms you list as negative keywords. If you specify that your ad is to appear with search results for domain names except for search results that include the search term free, free is your negative keyword.

Keyword phrase

A keyword phrase (also called key phrase) is a phrase of two or more keywords that's used for search engine optimization. For example, a page at a web hosting website might be optimized for the keyword phrase small business web host or dedicated game servers, as well as for other keyword phrases.
Keyword phrases are often just called keywords along with their single-word counterparts.

Keyword popularity

Keyword popularity refers to how many web pages have the keyword. For example, a Google search for "web hosting" (with the quotation marks) produces "about 131,000,000" results. Web hosting is a very popular keyword.

Keyword prominence

Keyword prominence is the prominence of keywords on a page. Keywords are more prominent in these locations:
  • The title element
  • The <h1> and other heading tags
  • Near the top of the page
  • Near the start of sentences
  • In alt tags
Search engines give more weight to keywords when they're more prominent on a page. For SEO, use keywords not only in the above locations but (where applicable) close to the start of those locations as well. For example, "Free domain name with your web hosting account" is a better heading for SEO than "Your web hosting account comes with a free domain name" (when optimizing for free domain name).

Keyword proximity

Keyword proximity refers to how close two keywords are to each other on a web page. Search engines give weight to the closeness of keywords. The keyword phrase dedicated hosting server, for example, is given much more weight as a keyword phrase than the three words would have if they were separated by other words.

Keyword research is the process of researching keywords that will bring targeted traffic to each page at your site. See How to research keywords.

Keyword-rich pages

Keyword-rich pages have a high keyword density and have good keyword prominence. In other words, their content is full of keywords in key places.

Keyword stuffing

Keyword stuffing is overusing a keyword to increase the keyword density for that keyword on its page. Example: "Our cheap dedicated servers are the best. We specialize in cheap dedicated servers. We've been providing cheap dedicated servers since we went into business to provide cheap dedicated servers two years ago. To read more about cheap dedicated servers, click on the cheap dedicated servers link." Repeating the same keyword out of context is also keyword stuffing.
Keyword stuffing can (but shouldn't) be done in these places:
  • On the page where visitors read it (as in the above example), including in the heading tags
  • As hidden text by making it the same color as the page background
  • In the page meta tags
  • In the page alt tags
  • In the page title element
Keyword stuffing is a type of black hat SEO, which means that search engines may penalize a website if the search engine bots detect the technique being used.

Website linking strategies are methods used to get or attempt to get people to link to your site. This page details terminology used when discussing linking strategies. Note that not all linking strategies are equal.

Link bait

Link bait is a term for web pages usually created with the hope or expectation that a lot of people will find them interesting enough to link to them of their own accord. Viral marketing helps people find link bait. Quality content that's unique, freebies of any sort, and entertaining pages are examples of (sometimes unintended) link bait.

Link building

Link building is the process of acquiring backlinks to a website, both one-way links and reciprocal links. Quality backlinks help increase a site's PageRank and help it do well in search engine results, so link building is a major part of SEO.

Link farms

A link farm is a website whose sole or main purpose is to provide links to other websites for SEO. Link farms are considered bad neighborhoods in SEO. When search engine bots identify sites as link farms, they may blacklist them.


Reciprocal linking

Reciprocal links (also called link exchanges and link swaps) are links from Website A to Website B and from Website B to Website A. The links may be to the page that has the reciprocal link, or they may be to a different page at the other site. Reciprocal links are less valuable for SEO as search engines give less weight to reciprocal links than to one-way links. Reciprocal links still have some SEO value, though, as long as they aren't the only type of backlinks to a site. They're also useful in bringing human traffic to a website.
When arranging reciprocal links with other webmasters, be sure to discuss which page the links will appear on at each site. For example, a link from a home page with only a few links is not equal to a deep link on a page with dozens of other links. Neither is a link from a PR6 page equal to a link from a PR3 page. Also look for link partners with relevant sites. Reciprocal links have little or no value for either SEO or human traffic if the sites don't have related content.

Three-way linking

Three-way linking is like reciprocal linking but between three websites instead of two. Website A links to Website B, Website B links to Website C, and Website C links to Website A. The purpose of three-way linking is to avoid the appearance of reciprocal links so that search engines will assign the links the link popularity of one-way links.
Since three-way linking is a form of deception to artificially boost link popularity, some people see it as black hat SEO. It's unknown whether search engines can detect three-way linking, but if they can't now, they will probably be able to in the future.

What are website backlinks?

Website backlinks are links to a web page from other web pages. Backlinks are also called inbound links or incoming links.

Why backlinks are important



Backlinks and SEO

When search engines calculate the value of a web page when displaying search results, the quantity and quality of backlinks to that page are a major factor. This is especially true of Google. Quantity is good. Quality with quantity is even better:
  • Backlinks carry more weight when the page they're on is relevant to the page they're linking to. If the anchor text in the backlink has keywords that you're optimizing the web page for, the backlinks are even more useful.
  • The higher the PageRank (PR) on the page with the backlink, the more value the backlink has.
  • With quality backlinks, a web page may gain a higher PR and have a better SERP (search engine results page) position.
When doing search engine optimization (SEO) for a website, an often ongoing task is to work on building more inbound links, or backlinks.

Backlinks and being found

Backlinks as part of SEO help people find your website by improving its position in search results, but backlinks are also useful in themselves. If websites with related content link to your website, people who are interested in your content are going to find it more easily by following those backlinks.


Backlinks and the competition

One way to look for sites to try to get backlinks from is to find out what the competition's backlinks are. If those backlinks are relevant to your website too, you have a list of websites to try to get backlinks from for your site.
If the goal is to have more backlinks than the competition does, check the backlinks for a number of competitors and work through the lists.

Backlinks and domain name value

If you're selling a domain name (with or without a website), it has more value if it has quality backlinks. The more quality backlinks, the better.


How to check backlinks

Some search engines have methods to check backlinks. In the instructions below, replace "example.com" with the domain that you're checking for backlinks.
Note that the search results below are rarely complete. Searching for backlinks with a few of these methods generally helps locate more backlinks.

Google

  • In the search engine: enter link:www.example.com (for the site) or link:www.example.com/page.html (for a specific page). (This method isn't known to be very reliable.)
  • Using Webmaster Tools (you need an account, and this works only for sites you have verified with Google):
    • Log in
    • Click on a domain you have verified
    • Go to Links
    • Go to Pages with external links
    • Click on the hyperlinked number in the "External links" column

Yahoo

The following are the same way to check backlinks via Yahoo, just different ways of accessing it. It offers options to show pages from all subdomains or only the domain entered.
  • In the search engine: enter link:http://www.example.com (for the site) or link:http://www.example.com/page.html (for a specific page).
  • Go directly to Yahoo Site Explorer, enter the URL in the search box, and click on "Explore."
Variations:
  • Use "site" instead of "link" in the above examples.
  • Omit the "www" to view backlinks that don't include "www."

MSN

MSN has discontinued reporting backlinks.

How to build backlinks

  • Provide quality content that other webmasters will want to link to.
  • Get listed in relevant directories.
  • Ask webmasters of websites with related but non-competing content if they would link to your site. Suggest specific pages to link to.
  • Suggest reciprocal links (link exchanges) with related but non-competing websites.
  • Find out what backlinks your competition has and work on getting those backlinks too.
  • Optimize your site for social media sites to attract social media backlinks.
