If you're new to web design and web hosting, this article provides an overview of what you need to create a website and how to get it online.

  • 3 Choosing a web host
  • 4 Building a website
    • 4.1 Creating a website
    • 4.2 Getting your website online

What you need
With few exceptions, every website needs:
  • A domain name (unless you want your website to be on a subdomain of another domain, such as sitename.example.com)
  • A web hosting account
  • Web pages or a website builder to upload to your web hosting account
  • An audience (not a necessity for the website's existence, but it's the reason behind almost every website online)

Getting a domain name

Choosing and registering a domain name

Numerous factors need to be considered when choosing a domain name, especially if the domain is for a business website. For details, see How to choose a domain name and The dos and don'ts of domain registration.
You can register a currently available domain name through any domain name registrar. The web host you choose will probably be a domain name reseller, which means that you'll be able to register a domain name through your web host. However, the usual advice is to register your domain name with a domain name registrar other than your web host. That way, if problems develop with your web host, you have the option to change your domain name settings and move your website to a different host.
You can also bid on an expiring domain at an expired domain auction house. Be sure to do a search for the domain and find out what it was used for before registering it. You don't want a domain that's been blacklisted from search engines.
Register your domain name as soon as you find one that you want. It might not be available the next day.

Using a domain name

After you have a domain name registered, you'll need to add the nameservers that your web host provides to your domain name record. Your web host will tell you what nameservers to use after you sign up for a web hosting account. Look for the nameserver fields at your domain name control panel and enter the nameserver names there.

Choosing a web host

If you have only one website, you probably want a shared hosting account. That is, unless your website is very big, will be getting a lot of traffic, or needs to have its own server for some other reason. With a shared hosting account, you'll have your own space online, but your site will be on a server with other clients' websites.
For advice on choosing a web host, see the articles in the Choosing a web host category.

Building a website

Creating a website

You have several options to create a website:
  • Learn HTML, CSS, and web design principles, and design your own website.
  • Buy an existing website template.
  • Hire a designer to design your website for you.
  • Use a content management system (CMS), for example, Joomla or Wordpress (a blog CMS that can be customized to be used for other types of sites too).
  • Use an online website builder (some web hosts include website builders in their hosting plans).
  • Use a combination of the above.
A CMS will allow you to add and update website content with no coding knowledge required. They have available designs (skins) to choose from, or you can design your own or hire a designer to design one for you. If you don't use a CMS, you'll need to know at least minimal HTML and CSS to update website content on your own.
A business website should look professional. Don't try to cut corners in this area. On the other hand, if your website is for personal use, it can be a useful learning experience to create it yourself.
For e-commerce website needs, see E-Commerce hosting.

Getting your website online

An FTP program will enable you to upload web page files from your computer to your web hosting account. The control panel that comes with your web hosting account may have a file manager, which provides another method to upload files.
Some control panels have options for users to upload some scripts directly to their websites, including CMS scripts.

Attracting an audience

Once your website is online and ready to be seen, attracting site visitors is usually the next goal. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of improving the position of web pages in search engine results for targeted keywords.

Definition of domain name servers
Every computer on the Internet has a numeric IP address (for example, 69.20.126.7) that acts like a telephone number, allowing each computer to find and talk to other computers. Because numeric addresses are hard to remember, mnemonic names that resolve or point to these numeric Internet addresses are typically used.

The mnemonic names are called domain names, and the service that resolves the names to numbers is called Domain Name Service or Domain Name System (DNS). The servers that answer queries on how to resolve these names are called domain name servers — also DNS for short, or just name servers.

Domain name servers are accessed almost time someone goes to a web page or uses email. (Websites can also be accessed via IP addresses.)

The DNS database

One person can make up to hundreds of DNS requests in a day, and since billions of people are online at any time, the DNS system is one of the largest databases in the world. It's a distributed database, meaning that the database is maintained on computers in various locations in many different countries. No single organization is responsible for it, but millions of people update it. New IP addresses and domain names are created every day and added to the billions already in existence.

How domain name servers work

DNS and web hosting

These steps make it possible for name servers to connect people to web pages:
  • Website owners register the domain names they'll be using through a domain name registrar. Domains must be currently registered.
  • When users open a web hosting account with a web hosting provider, the web hosting provider sends the clients name servers to use for their account. Name servers typically start with ns1 and ns2 and then have a domain belonging to the web host. Or the clients may have private name servers using their own domain, for example, ns1.inetinteractive.com and ns2.inetinteractive.com. These name servers have IP addresses assigned to them.
  • The web hosting clients must enter those name servers in their domain record via their domain name control panel. In other words, they need to point the domains to the name servers.
If the web hosting clients have more than one website on the same account (for example, if they have multi-domain hosting, a reseller account, or a VPS), they can set up additional domains via their web hosting and domain name control panels using the same name servers.
Domains can take up to 24 hours to propagate (be accessible from any computer connected to the Internet), but they often propagate within an hour or less.

DNS and website access

Domain name servers convert domains into IP addresses so that users can access the web pages that they're trying to reach.

A user types into a browser a URL, for example, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki. The domain name for this page is webhostingtalk.com. When the request for the domain is made, the browser connects with a domain name server to search for the IP address for that domain. If the name server has cached the IP address for that domain, it can respond faster. If it hasn't, it connects to other name servers to try to locate the IP address for that domain. The web page will be displayed after the domain name server has successfully located the IP address for the domain.

Domain name - Web Hosting Relationship

For The Most Updated Discount Coupon Codes & My Personal Web Hosting Recommendations(though my experience is not much) ,Click http://nightwishmarketing.web.officelive.com/WebHosting.aspx

I basically covered Overall picture of Web Hosting,Server and Domains so I might pick up articles for definitions of technical terms OR My recommendations of Web Hosting Companies.  Stay Tuned for next !!

So, what has the domain name to do with hosting a website? Well, there is a close relationship between your domain name and your web host (the computer where you'll host the website).

Domain name and IP relationship
The domain name is in fact a label that will redirect the visitors to the IP address of the computer where the site is hosted, so these two work in pairs.
We use this system because it's easier to remember a name rather than an IP address, which is a group of four numbers, each number between 0 and 255 (e.g. 67.72.123.201).
The domain name - IP address pair is then recorded by a DNS (Domain Name Server).
But although they are related, the website/domain name and the hosting server are two different things, so one should not confuse the domain name of a website with the hosting for that website.

 An analogy
Let's say you want to call your friends, the Smiths, to invite them over for dinner. You ask your wife to do it, as you are a little busy at the moment. She doesn't know the number by heart, so she searches for the number in the phone book and calls them.

This example almost replicates the way domain names and hosting work. The Smiths' name is the equivalent of the domain name. You didn't ask your wife to call a number; you just said to call the Smiths. Of course, the Smiths have a telephone number associated with their name; that's how you can actually reach them by phone. The telephone number is the equivalent of the IP address of the computer where the site is hosted.

The role of the phone book is also an important one. It helps you find the match: name - phone number. The phone book role is played by the DNS servers. They are a network of "phone books" that know every domain name - IP address association, so when you type a website address in your browser, you get the content of the site that is associated to that name and not the content of another site (or empty content).
To change hosting, you simply redirect the domain name to another IP and modify the DNS servers of your domain name. Of course you also need to actually move the files to the new hosting server . It's like the Smiths getting a new phone number. The name stays the same, but they can be reached by calling a different number.

Summary
When you're buying a domain name, you're buying in fact the right to redirect that URL to a web server of your choice, where your website is hosted.

Web Servers

This article is repiblished, permitted by http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
I found an article for analogy of "Domain" and "Phonebook" which will be next. Stay Tuned !!

What is a web server?

A web server is a computer that can store and serve content over the Internet. It can accept requests from browsers (for example, Internet Explorer or Firefox) and then return the appropriate content in HTML format and linked objects (images, videos, audio, etc.). It can store large files and serve as a field for different programming languages (mySQL, etc.) It can send and receive email.
Computers that provide services, such as the above, are called servers. There are numerous types of servers in addition to web servers, from mail servers to IRC servers. In the web hosting industry, web servers are usually just called servers.
Each web server has a unique IP address. Often numerous websites share the same IP. People who are visiting websites only need to click on or type in the website URL, and the web server does the work to bring the requested web page to them.

How web servers work

To understand how web servers work, let’s look at the steps involved when someone wants to visit WHTwiki.
  1. Using a web browser, a person types in the URL: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki.
  2. The browser breaks down the URL into the protocol (http) and the domain name (webhostingtalk.com).
  3. The browser communicates with a Domain Name Server to look up the IP address of the webhostingtalk.com URL.
  4. The browser connects to the server that the website is hosted on and sends a request asking for the site webhostingtalk.com.
  5. The web server then locates and retrieves the requested file and sends it back to the browser in HTML format.
  6. The browser reads the HTML file and renders the page on the screen.
  7. The WHTwiki home page appears on the person's computer screen.
All of the above takes only seconds in most cases.

Web Hosting Explained

This article is repiblished, permitted by http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

What is web hosting?

Web hosting implies a computer, somehow similar to the one you have at home, connected to the Internet, where your website’s files reside. This type of computer is called a server, and people who browse the Internet can view your website by accessing your website files on that server.
The company that provides this service is a web hosting provider, or web host. A web host is a service provider with a server or a network of servers connected to the Internet, where you can place your website.

How web hosting works

A web host rents out server space and connection to you so that you can make your website available on the Internet. Web hosts are responsible for keeping the server (and your website) online and for maintaining and upgrading it.
Larger web hosts have hundreds of servers. A network of servers in a specific location is called a datacenter. Datacenters have fast connections to the Internet, 24/7 monitoring for secure access, UPS and battery backups in case of power failures, controlled temperature and humidity, and so on, providing an optimal environment for the hardware systems located in the facility.
Depending on your budget and your needs, you can rent from the web host a whole server, you can share the rent on a server with others, or you can even buy the server and pay only for the connection and the maintenance. So, when we talk about web hosting, we talk about three types of hosting: dedicated hosting, shared hosting, and collocated hosting.

Web hosting types

This section has an overview of web hosting types. For more detailed explanations, see the See also section of this page.

Dedicated / VPS hosting

With dedicated hosting, you have a dedicated server where you can store your website(s). You have remote access on the server, and you can install and update on it any software you want or need. This kind of hosting is suitable for big sites with lot of traffic (and income) because the costs are higher than, for example, shared hosting.
VPS or Virtual Private Server hosting is similar to dedicated hosting except that you have a section of a dedicated server partitioned for your use. You have most of the benefits of a dedicated server, but your resources and costs are less.

Shared hosting

Shared hosting means that your website resides on a server with other websites. The total space on the server's hard drive is divided into smaller amounts, and you get an amount of that disk space. So, for your website, a set amount of disk space and data transfer (bandwidth) will be allocated. Your website will also share the server’s hardware and software resources (the memory, the CPU, the database server, etc.), but rest assured, your information will remain confidential. No user/website can access the files of another user/website residing on the same server. This type of hosting is the cheapest of the three types presented, but it’s good enough for almost 95% of the people looking for a web host.

Collocated hosting

Collocated hosting, or co-location hosting, is similar to dedicated hosting with the difference that you actually own the server. So, besides software upgrades, you can buy hardware upgrades too (more memory, larger hard drives, etc.). The advantage is that the server stays in a protected environment, with optimal connections to the Internet, rather than staying in an office or at home.
