Deciding what type of web hosting account is best for you is not difficult once you know what each type of account offers. This page compares shared hosting accounts, reseller hosting accounts, VPS hosting accounts, and dedicated hosting accounts.

Shared hosting accounts

A shared hosting account is a web hosting account on a server shared with other websites that are owned by other clients. As long as the server is managed well and isn't overloaded, you'll rarely or never be aware of other sites on the same server.

Think of a shared hosting account as like an apartment you rent in an apartment building. The space you rent is yours to use, and you're responsible for furnishing it and not doing any damage to it. General maintenance and repairs are the responsibility of the building manager. Your web host is like a building manager for the suite (web hosting space) you rent.

Shared hosting is the least expensive type of web hosting account. If you have just one website, a shared hosting account will most likely meet your needs. The majority of websites can function well on shared hosting accounts, and some shared web hosting accounts can be used for multiple sites.

You'll probably need a different type of web hosting account if one or more of the following is true:

• You need more disk space, bandwidth, databases, or other resources than shared hosting accounts provide or allow for. (While some shared hosting accounts advertise unlimited disk space and bandwidth, your account may be suspended if you use more than what the web host considers fair use of resources.)
• Your site is subject to DDoS attacks or spikes in usage and thus affects other sites on the same server.
• You want other users to be able to have sites using your web space and with their own control panels.
• You want more control and security.

 

Reseller hosting accounts

A reseller hosting account allows users to resell web hosting space to other users. Resellers have an additional control panel that allows them to set up web hosting packages and sub-accounts, monitor resource usage, adjust disk space and bandwidth allocations, and more. Reseller accounts are commonly used by newer web hosts who don't have enough clients for a dedicated server, web designers and others who offer web hosting as an additional service, and people who have multiple websites.

A reseller account can be compared to renting the whole floor of an apartment building and subletting suites to other people. That floor (reseller account) becomes a large chunk of private space but is still part of the apartment building (server). The building manager (web host) is still responsible for general maintenance and repairs, but you're responsible for the space on that floor and for paying the monthly rent.

If you have a reseller account, you might downgrade to a shared hosting account if the reseller account becomes more than what you need. Or you'll probably upgrade to a VPS or dedicated hosting account if one or more of the following applies:

• You need more disk space, bandwidth, databases, or other resources than the largest available reseller account provides or allows for.
• One or more of the sites on your account is subject to DDoS attacks or spikes in usage and thus affects other sites on the same server.
• You want more control and security.

 

VPS hosting accounts

A VPS account offers more than a reseller account but less (and at less cost) than a dedicated hosting account. A VPS, or virtual private server, is part of a server that's been partitioned off for one client to use as though it's a mini dedicated server. It has its own operating system and its own resources (disk space, bandwidth), so it has little connection with other sites on the same server other than being hosted in the same box. Clients need to know how to manage a VPS, choose an account that includes VPS management, or hire a server management company.

Using the apartment analogy, having a VPS is like leasing an entire wing of an apartment building and becoming the building manager for that wing. You can put up and tear down walls, replace the appliances, add an alarm system, and other things that you couldn't do if you were renting just a suite or even a floor. A VPS is a common choice for those who want flexibility and space but don't need a dedicated server.

VPS users typically upgrade to dedicated servers when they need more space than a VPS account provides.

Dedicated hosting accounts

Dedicated hosting accounts are for dedicated servers and are the most expensive of the options on this page. With the entire server available for your use, you decide how to set it up and use it, and you're responsible for all the sites on it, whether it's one site or dozens of sites. As with a VPS, you can install whatever software you want, but unlike a VPS, there are no users on the server other than the ones you allott space to.

A dedicated server is not just an apartment suite, floor, or even wing — it's the equivalent of leasing the entire apartment building. The property manager (the web host) is responsible for taking care of the building grounds (maintaining it in a datacenter) but may or may not be responsible for taking care of the building itself. Dedicated servers are offered as managed or unmanaged servers. If servers are managed, the web host handles all maintenance. If they're unmanaged, you're responsible for managing them or hiring a server management company to manage them.

People with dedicated hosting accounts tend to be web hosts, people who have large sites or sites with high resource needs, or others who need more than a VPS can provide.

Domain name content

• Make it easy to remember.
• For a business site, use your business name or a variation of it.

Domain name variations

• To prevent other people from capitalizing on your success, register different extensions of the domain if possible. For example, if you have a .com domain, consider registering the .net, .info, and perhaps other variations. (If you have a country-specific domain extension and your site is primarily for people in that country, having more than one domain is less important.)
• If your domain has common misspellings, register the misspellings and point them to your site.
• Generic domains can be useful for advertising.

What to avoid (or be careful with) in a domain/business name

• Numbers can be confusing. Some people will type the number as a numeral, and others will type it as a word. If you really want to use a number in a domain, register it both ways, e.g., superproducts2go.com and superproductstogo.com.
• Be especially careful with 1 and 0. 1 can look like the letter I, and the number 0 can look like the letter O.
• In general, pick a domain that is easily spelled when spoken.
• Hyphens in domains generally aren't a good idea. People will type the domain with and without the hyphens. If you really want hyphens, register the domain with and without them and have both domains point to your website. And if the unhyphenated version isn't available, you're risking losing business to that site because of people who go there when looking for your site.
• Don't choose a domain name where the plural form could be confusing, for example, ohioschool.com and ohioschools.com. If both aren't available, you risk losing site visitors to the other domain name. For most domains, this isn't a problem. For example, lawyers.com would obviously be a directory, and lawyer.com would be a specific (lucky) lawyer's web site. However, if your domain name in plural form is available, you should register it.
• Don't choose a domain name that contains double consonants, especially the letter s, such as workssuper.com.
• If you coin a word or use an uncommon surname for your business name, be prepared for no one to know how to spell it until you've spent millions in branding. Try using common words in your business name instead.

Domain name length

The shortest domain names are already registered. While you probably can't get a three-letter domain, you can still consider length.

• Shorter is generally better. Simply because it's much easier to type, for your visitors to remember and to fit on business cards or other business publications.
• Longer may be better than shorter when it's a phrase that people can remember easily.
• Avoid more than three or (at the very most) four words in a domain name.

I do not pretend to be an expert. Far from it. So please don't take this comment as an expert comment, but reference only.

I use their auto protection called “Tea Timer” while I am online together with auto protection of Free AVG anti virus software.

This means AVG and ZoneAlarm work together with good compatibility.

Also I knew at that time that FREE AVG software was very popular.

Datacenter selection
When selecting a datacenter, it is always advisable to select a datacenter which is geographically near the target audience of your sites. For example, if you will be serving sites targeted for specific geographic areas, it’s better to select a datacenter in the same area to prevent any network loss or connectivity issues. Otherwise, select a location which is known to have a good network and overall service quality. Also make sure the datacenter is not located in an area prone to natural disasters.

Backbone / connectivity providers
You should always know what backbone providers supply connectivity to the datacenter you are selecting. Make sure they have multiple sources of Internet connectivity, each sustainable enough to take the workload in case of any network connectivity issues.

A datacenter should have very high connectivity speeds. The following are some of the high-speed connections available (note: mb = megabits):

T1 Up to 1.544 mb/s
DS3/T3 Up to 45 mb/s
FastE Up to 100 mb/s
OC3 Up to 155 mb/s
OC12 Up to 622 mb/s
GigE Up to 1000 mb/s
OC48 Up to 2488 mb/s
OC192 Up to 9953 mb/s
Most good datacenters have multiple OC12 lines, at the minimum. The bigger datacenters have GigE lines, which allow for additional capacity. Actual performance does not always correlate with the size of the connection.

Datacenter setup
Every datacenter’s website provides information on the kind of setup their facility has. A careful review of their website can provide you with useful information about their stability. Apart from the location and backbone providers, the following are some other setup amenities to look for when selecting a datacenter.

Power delivery/UPS
Servers need to be up 24 hours a day, so continuous power supply is the most basic need of any datacenter. The datacenter you select should also have power backup arrangements to ensure smooth operation even in the case of a prolonged power outage. Most datacenters rely on heavy duty diesel generators or heavy duty UPS for this purpose.

Security
Your servers can have confidential and important data loaded on them. This data needs to be safeguarded by both software security and physical security. You can manage software security remotely, but it is up to the datacenter to ensure the physical security of your servers. Most good datacenters have closed-circuit cameras monitoring their facility 24x7 and allow only certain staff to access the actual server racks. Monitoring and logging of visitor activity is also another good security measure.

Air conditioning / fire control equipment
Servers work 24 hours a day. They are bound to heat up. A temperature-controlled environment is needed to keep servers at a good, stable working temperature; therefore, air conditioning equipment is needed. The server rooms should be maintained at 68°F-70°F (20°C-22°C) for proper server operation. Emergency fire control equipment should be present in the datacenter, which is literally a web of thousands of wires. Fire control systems with automated triggering are a must in such facilities.

Data Transfer (a.k.a Bandwidth)
Data transfer is another important factor to consider when selecting a datacenter. Many datacenters provide around 1000 to 2000GB/month of data transfer with their standard dedicated server packages. But if you have very busy sites, you can consume well above that each month, so keep in mind the additional bandwidth costs per GB for the datacenter you select. Normally datacenters charge around $0.10 to $0.50 per GB for overusage of bandwidth. Do contact your provider for more details about bandwidth overage costs.

Hardware
Apart from the network and the datacenter setup, your server’s performance depends on the quality of its hardware. Datacenters recycle hardware, and after a certain age, hardware becomes unusable. Even though you cannot guarantee you will always get new hardware, if a datacenter can give you a few hardware replacement guarantees, you should consider it a plus. Hardware failures do occur even with new hardware equipment, and a datacenter that is ready to replace it within a few hours is a good one.

WordPress looks much better than Google Blogger and I created  http://nightwishmarketing.wordpress.com/
It is a free WordPress blog site (Free Web Hosting).
But it has much more restrictions than Google Blogger such as1 java scripts are not allowed 2 Adsense is not allowed 3. Aweber opt in form is not allowed etc.
So I am thinking of A. using Free web hosting which has one click installation of WordPress OR B. downloading free WordPress editor from wordpress.org and loading it to FREE Web Hosting Services.
In this case Wordpress Blog site's restrictions above do not apply.
If I create several wordpress sites hosted by others I would like to use Addon domains apart from sub domains XXXXX.domainname.com
I am not familiar with so -called "Addon Domains",but I found a very good article below.

What are addon domains?

Addon domains are domains that use the same web hosting account and resources (disk space, bandwidth, databases) as another domain. They typically point to a directory of the main website but are their own sites. They don't have their own control panel, but they have their own site stats and FTP manager. Site visitors and search engines can't detect if a website is the main site or an addon domain for an account.

Some web hosts include unlimited addon domains with their account packages, some include a set number (perhaps only one), some have fees per addon domain, and some don't include addon domains at all.

Difference between addon domains and parked domains

Addon domains and parked domains both share resources. With parked domains, however, the parked domain points to the same page that the main domain does.

Parked domains allow webmasters to direct traffic to the same site via more than one URL. Addon domains allow webmasters to have one web hosting account and more than one site on that account.

Addon domains and control panels

The ability to use addon domains depends on the control panel and the web hosting plan. cPanel and DirectAdmin, for example, include an option for addon domains. This option works only if the web host has it enabled. Some control panels don't have any methods to create addon domains.

First, verify that a web hosting account has addon domains. The next step to set up addon domains with any control panel is to point the nameservers for the addon domain to the nameservers for the main domain. Allow up to 24 hours (sometimes more) for the domain to resolve to the nameservers.

How to create an addon domain in cPanel

1. At your cPanel control panel, click on the "Addon Domains" icon and fill in the following:
    1.1 The "New Domain Name" field: your addon domain (without www) 
    1.2 The "Subdomain/FTP Username" field: your domain without the extension (this may be   filled in automatically) 
    1.3The "Document Root" field: usually /public_html/youraddondomain.com (this may be filled in automatically) 
    1.4Your password in each of the password fields
2. Click on "Add Domain," and you have your addon domain set up.

How to create an addon domain in DirectAdmin

• At your DirectAdmin control panel, click on the "Advanced Tools" icon, then the "Host Additional Domains" icon, and then the "Add Another Domain" link.
• Fill in your addon domain in all lower-case characters (without www).
• Enter a bandwidth amount for this domain or check the "Same as Main Account" box.
• Click on "Create," and you have your addon domain set up.
