To create a website, you need to choose or design a template (a design format that can be used for each page), organize and highlight content, and make everything from contact forms to shopping carts function properly. This article is an overview to help people new to web design get started creating a basic website.

Contents

  • 1 The website design
    • 1.1 Design from scratch
    • 1.2 Use a WYSIWYG editor
    • 1.3 Use or modify an existing template
    • 1.4 Use a website builder
  • 2 The website content
  • 3 The website function
  • 4 Getting your website online

1. The website design
Whichever method you use to design a template, you need to create a layout with (typically) two or three columns and choose a color scheme that's suitable for the content. An online search for website color combinations, website color scheme generator, or related keywords will lead to websites and web tools to help you choose colors for your site.

1.1 Design from scratch

To design a website without any web design tools, you need to know basic HTML and (to design to current standards) CSS. If you expect to design only one website, designing a website from scratch is probably not the best option. It takes a long time to learn HTML and CSS, and the design options below require much less time. However, HTML and CSS are invaluable to learn if you expect to create or modify more than a few sites.
Numerous text editors allow users to create and edit web code. To varying degrees, they help users by doing such things as highlighting code and automatically closing open tags. You still need to know HTML and CSS with a text editor, though.

1.2 Use a WYSIWYG editor

WYSISYG stands for what you see is what you get. When you use a WYSIWYG editor, you design the appearance, and the HTML and CSS code are automatically created. Some WYSIWYG editors are known for adding unnecessary coding, so even a basic knowledge of HTML is useful (although not necessary) when using a WYSIWYG editor.

1.3 Use or modify an existing template

You can buy premade website templates or use free templates offered at some sites. Even when you pay for a template, it may have been sold before or still be available for sale; be sure to read the terms of sale. Free templates will almost certainly be used at other websites as well. Either way, you can make them unique by changing the color scheme, replacing some images with your own, and making other minor changes if you know enough HTML and CSS to do so.

1.4 Use a website builder

Some web hosts offer a website builder to use as part of their hosting packages. Website builders have improved greatly in the past decade or so and can be used to produce impressive-looking websites without any HTML or CSS knowledge required. Drawbacks are that the websites can't be modified beyond what the website builder allows and, if you ever change web hosts, you won't be able to move your website as it is unless the new web host offers the same website builder.

2. The website content

Writing for the Web is not the same as writing for print. Web content should be skimmable and scannable, with headings, short paragraphs, bulleted lists, and key information set off in text boxes or with other formatting. The website design and website content should work together.

3. The website function

In addition to a design and content, most websites require coding for functions such as a contact form and a way to order and products or services. Numerous scripts, both free and commercial, are available for each purpose. Ecommerce sites have more requirements, such as how to accept payments.

4. Getting your website online

To get your website online, you also need a domain name and a web host. More details are at How to get started with a website.

Overview

Choosing a domain name registrar is much like choosing a web host — it is important to choose carefully.
Before choosing a registrar, you should look at:
  • Pricing
  • Support
  • ICANN accredited or not
  • Reviews

Pricing

Of course, pricing is an important part of your domain purchase. Nobody wants to pay the $100.00 that Network Solutions used to charge for domains. Domains can be bought for as little as $9.00 now.
But you should always make sure that the price isn't too good to be true. No decent-sized company will charge $0.50 for .com domains — they will make a loss on them.
You should NEVER go with the cheapest domain registrar. Spend a few more dollars, and go with a better company.
Remember that .com, .net domains cost around $7 [depending on if the company is an ICANN accredited, or a domain reseller, so anything less than around $8.50 is too low, and the company will not be making a decent profit, and you could lose your domain name.

Support

You will need support at least once. Whether it's a simple question or something requiring a lot of work, you will want the best support.
One of the best ways to test the support is to see if domain registrars have or do the following:
  • A support link is visible sitewide
  • They have at least two support options
  • If they have live chat, it is online when they say it should be
  • They reply within 24 hours
Send them a simple sales email, and see how long it takes. Anything over 36 hours is appalling.

ICANN accredited

ICANN is the people in charge of monitoring domains. You can become accredited by paying a few thousand dollars per year. Checking if a domain name registrar is ICANN accredited is normally a good way to see the best registrars as the accredited ones must have a few thousand dollars in their bank account and have insurance.
Some other registrars are resellers of accredited registrars. Most of the time, resellers are protected by their registrar, so in the event of a problem, the registrar can take over the domains.

  • 2 How cloud hosting works

  • 4 Disadvantages of cloud hosting

What is cloud hosting?

Cloud hosting is a web hosting service delivered from a group of connected servers. The term cloud hosting (also called clustered hosting) is not precisely defined yet. In general, however, a hosting service can be considered cloud hosting when it is delivered from a fully redundant, multi-server system, in which the resources are dynamically scalable and often virtualized.
In less technical terminology, cloud hosting uses a number of servers all connected together (a cloud), and sites on the servers can use resources from all the servers in that cloud. Processing power, hard drives, and memory are shared. Servers can be easily added or removed as necessary, and if one server is down, sites use resources from other servers instead.

How cloud hosting works

A cloud hosting service is usually delivered from a load-balanced cluster server platform, while the data is stored in a SAN (Storage Area Network).
Cloud hosting providers measure compute cycles, an indicator which measures how much processing time applications require. This enables cloud hosting to be provided and billed as a part of a different service model than that used by other web hosting services. Clients pay for actual resources needed.

Advantages of cloud hosting

  • You pay for only the resources you need.
  • It provides good scalability. You can easily increase or decrease resources without moving sites to other servers.
  • Servers can be deployed instantly.
  • It provides better uptime than other types of web hosting.
  • Traffic spikes aren't a problem; the cloud can handle them.
  • If the servers are in different datacenters, datacenter problems can be less of a concern.
  • Different technologies can be used together that can't be used together without cloud hosting. For example, .php and .asp files can work on the same site, even in the same folder, drawing on technologies within the cloud.
  • You don't need to install hardware or software. Instead, you connect with a cloud that has the hardware or software you need.

Disadvantages of cloud hosting
  • Lack of root access means less control.
  • Sites using cloud hosting can still have downtime if the connections between servers aren't working.
  • As a relatively new service, it doesn't have a long track record.
  • It isn't widely offered or used.

Clustered hosting

The word cluster has had an industry-related meaning in the computing world long before Internet web hosting.

Cluster and computers

When discussing computers, cluster refers to a group of computers that are connected to each other on a network. They are made to work together so that they can be accessed as a single unit.
A cluster may connect many computers, via high-speed Ethernet or local networks, to process data. For example, clusters may be deployed for top-end scientific processing, such as decrypting algorithms.

Cluster in web hosting

Clustered hosting is ideal for those looking for a 100% uptime solution.
The clustered platform is employed in web hosting primarily to eliminate the problems associated with shared hosting environments. In normal circumstances, clustered hosting allows clients to employ a unique infrastructure to handle security, load balancing, and vital site data resources with greater efficiency and redundancy.
In a clustered hosting environment, a website is not dependent on just one server, but instead shares the resources of multiple servers, much like in the distributed network infrastructure. If one server fails, another server takes over. These servers are sometimes collocated in different physical locations for ultimate redundancy.

Dedicated hosting

Dedicated hosting is the renting of a server from a web hosting provider. The server is not shared by anyone else, which affords the operator complete control of the machine. There are generally two types of dedicated hosting: managed and unmanaged.
At WHT, you can discuss dedicated hosting in the Dedicated Server Forum and the Managed Hosting and Services Forum.

Contents

  • 1 Advantages and disadvantages of dedicated hosting
    • 1.1 Advantages of dedicated hosting
    • 1.2 Disadvantages of dedicated hosting
  • 2 Managed servers
    • 2.1 Advantages of managed servers
    • 2.2 Disadvantages of managed servers
  • 3 Unmanaged servers
    • 3.1 Advantages of unmanaged servers
    • 3.2 Disadvantages of unmanaged servers

Advantages and disadvantages of dedicated hosting

Advantages of dedicated hosting

  • You don't share the server with anyone else. You have the potential for better security. And you have more control than with shared hosting.
  • You don't have to buy or maintain the equipment. Hardware replacement is covered by the hosting provider.

Disadvantages of dedicated hosting

  • Dedicated hosting is more costly than shared hosting, especially if you don't have the technical expertise to manage the server yourself.
  • If there is an internal error with the Dedicated Server it will take a lot longer to fix than if you where with shared hosting.

Managed servers

Managed servers are servers that the hosting provider either helps to maintain or fully maintains. Managed dedicated server hosts provide various levels of management. However, what the levels include differs from host to host. Most dedicated server providers supply some level of server support.

Advantages of managed servers

  • Security updates are completed by your managed server provider.
  • Operating system updates are completed by your managed server provider.
  • Control panel updates are completed by your managed server provider.
  • Any problems with the server or operation with that server are resolved by your managed server provider.

Disadvantages of managed servers

  • Depending on the host, you might not have root/admin access if you have a fully managed server.
  • Managed servers cost more.

Unmanaged servers

Unmanaged servers are servers that the operator must fully maintain. The hosting provider generally either does not provide support for the server or provides very limited support. Hardware replacements, however, are still the responsibility of the hosting provider.

Advantages of unmanaged servers

  • You maintain complete control over the server.
  • If you know how to administer a server, a self-managed a.k.a. unmanaged server will cost you less than a managed server.

Disadvantages of unmanaged servers

  • You are on your own.
  • If you require the host's admins to do troubleshooting, it will probably cost you per hour or per incident.
  • Managing the server yourself can take a lot of time.

Virtual Private Server

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

A Virtual Private Server (abbreviated as VPS) is a dedicated section of a server that is divided or partitioned into several parts to operate like multiple servers. Virtual Private Servers are usually the next step up from shared hosting, and they're a step below dedicated hosting.
Virtual Private Servers afford the operator complete control over the dedicated section of the machine, which acts as its own operating system.

Advantages of Virtual Private Servers
  • Operators maintain full administrative access (root access) to their section.
  • Accounts are isolated (to some extent) from other accounts on the same server.
  • Hardware and network infrastructures are maintained by the hosting provider.
  • They're less expensive than dedicated server plans.

Disadvantages of Virtual Private Servers

  • They're more expensive than shared hosting plans, so they're cost-effective only if the allotted space is used.
  • Operators are responsible for some of the server-side administration, such as application installation and maintenance. Those who don't have the necessary skills may have to hire someone to administer their VPSes.
  • Hardware assets such as CPU, RAM, and Disk I/O are still shared. (it depends on what type of virtualization)
  • If you don't secure your VPS properly, it may be open to hackers.
  • Most VPSes typically do not allow the modification of the kernel. This can prevent the use of some software that does require kernel modifications.

Types of VPS Solutions

  • HyperV
  • OpenVZ
  • VMware
  • Xen
  • VDSmanager
  • Parallels Virtuozzo
  • Linux KVM (Kernel Virtualization Module)

Reseller hosting

What is reseller web hosting?
Reseller hosting is a type of hosting in which the account holder maintains a reseller web hosting account (a master account) on a shared server and typically sells sub-accounts to clients. Resellers usually act as intermediaries in that they sell disk space and bandwidth allocated to them by their host.

The majority of web hosts that aren't using reseller accounts themselves offer reseller web hosting.

Who uses reseller web hosting?

Reseller hosting is most commonly used by those who want to start their own web hosting company. Reseller web hosting accounts provide a relatively inexpensive way for newcomers to the industry to offer web hosting services.

People with more than one website also often have reseller accounts but for their own use. Reseller accounts allow the account holders to adjust the amount of disk space and bandwidth allotted to each site and to manage all their sites via one control panel login.

Advantages of reseller hosting

  • As with shared web hosting, account holders can choose a package size to meet their needs and upgrade or downgrade when necessary rather than using an entire server.
  • The web host is responsible for server maintenance.
  • Account holders can access all of their and their clients' sites via one control panel.
  • Account holders can assign and modify the available disk space and bandwidth available to all the sites on the reseller account.
  • Reseller account holders can earn revenue as a web host.
  • With private nameservers or private label reseller hosting, resellers can create their own brand without the appearance of being a reseller.
  • New web hosts can enter the market with low startup expenses by using a reseller account.

Disadvantages of reseller hosting

  • Reseller hosting plans are more expensive than shared hosting plans, so they're cost-effective only if the allotted space is used.
  • If the servers are down frequently or there are other problems, resellers lose credibility with their clients.
  • If resellers have to change web hosts, the change can cause inconvenience to the resellers' clients as well as to the reseller.
