What are blogs?
The word blog comes from web log or weblog. Blogs are website entries published in diary format with the date and time appearing with each blog entry. Entries can be grouped by category, and the home page displays the most recent entries.
Blogs often have diary-type content, but increasingly, blogs have been used for business and information sites as well. Active blogs have new content added to them regularly, and readers often have the option to comment on the content.
Numerous blog software programs are available, many of which are free. RSS feeds make blog content instantly available to subscribers, making the blog format good for SEO as well as for its ease of use.
History of blogs
Blogs of some type have existed since the beginning of the Internet, before the term blog was even fashioned. Blogging was done in the form of mailing lists, Usenet posts, and bulletin board systems (BBS). However, people wanted to publish personal or business content, and blogs were introduced. By following a website format, blogs were meant to simplify posting.
Blogs and marketing
In addition to being good for SEO, blogs are sometimes the face of a company to the online world and can influence buying decisions. Many people are more likely to do business with a company that has a voice online, that shares new information regularly, and that they can interact with by commenting in the blog.
Blog commenting and writing guest blog articles have become SEO and marketing activities in themselves. The articles and comments typically allow for links to the writer or commenter's site (although many many blogs have no-follow links), and if the articles are comments are helpful, they will attract people to visit the site. On the downside, blog comment spam is a problem that blog owners need to contend with.
