What is reseller web hosting?
Reseller hosting is a type of hosting in which the account holder maintains a reseller web hosting account (a master account) on a shared server and typically sells sub-accounts to clients. Resellers usually act as intermediaries in that they sell disk space and bandwidth allocated to them by their host.

The majority of web hosts that aren't using reseller accounts themselves offer reseller web hosting.

Disadvantages of reseller hosting

• Reseller hosting plans are more expensive than shared hosting plans, so they're cost-effective only if the allotted space is used.
• If the servers are down frequently or there are other problems, resellers lose credibility with their clients.
• If resellers have to change web hosts, the change can cause inconvenience to the resellers' clients as well as to the reseller.

Shared hosting accounts

A shared hosting account is a web hosting account on a server shared with other websites that are owned by other clients. As long as the server is managed well and isn't overloaded, you'll rarely or never be aware of other sites on the same server.

Think of a shared hosting account as like an apartment you rent in an apartment building. The space you rent is yours to use, and you're responsible for furnishing it and not doing any damage to it. General maintenance and repairs are the responsibility of the building manager. Your web host is like a building manager for the suite (web hosting space) you rent.

Shared hosting is the least expensive type of web hosting account. If you have just one website, a shared hosting account will most likely meet your needs. The majority of websites can function well on shared hosting accounts, and some shared web hosting accounts can be used for multiple sites.

You'll probably need a different type of web hosting account if one or more of the following is true:

• You need more disk space, bandwidth, databases, or other resources than shared hosting accounts provide or allow for. (While some shared hosting accounts advertise unlimited disk space and bandwidth, your account may be suspended if you use more than what the web host considers fair use of resources.)
• Your site is subject to DDoS attacks or spikes in usage and thus affects other sites on the same server.
• You want other users to be able to have sites using your web space and with their own control panels.
• You want more control and security.

 

Reseller hosting accounts

A reseller hosting account allows users to resell web hosting space to other users. Resellers have an additional control panel that allows them to set up web hosting packages and sub-accounts, monitor resource usage, adjust disk space and bandwidth allocations, and more. Reseller accounts are commonly used by newer web hosts who don't have enough clients for a dedicated server, web designers and others who offer web hosting as an additional service, and people who have multiple websites.

A reseller account can be compared to renting the whole floor of an apartment building and subletting suites to other people. That floor (reseller account) becomes a large chunk of private space but is still part of the apartment building (server). The building manager (web host) is still responsible for general maintenance and repairs, but you're responsible for the space on that floor and for paying the monthly rent.

If you have a reseller account, you might downgrade to a shared hosting account if the reseller account becomes more than what you need. Or you'll probably upgrade to a VPS or dedicated hosting account if one or more of the following applies:

• You need more disk space, bandwidth, databases, or other resources than the largest available reseller account provides or allows for.
• One or more of the sites on your account is subject to DDoS attacks or spikes in usage and thus affects other sites on the same server.
• You want more control and security.

 

VPS hosting accounts

A VPS account offers more than a reseller account but less (and at less cost) than a dedicated hosting account. A VPS, or virtual private server, is part of a server that's been partitioned off for one client to use as though it's a mini dedicated server. It has its own operating system and its own resources (disk space, bandwidth), so it has little connection with other sites on the same server other than being hosted in the same box. Clients need to know how to manage a VPS, choose an account that includes VPS management, or hire a server management company.

Using the apartment analogy, having a VPS is like leasing an entire wing of an apartment building and becoming the building manager for that wing. You can put up and tear down walls, replace the appliances, add an alarm system, and other things that you couldn't do if you were renting just a suite or even a floor. A VPS is a common choice for those who want flexibility and space but don't need a dedicated server.

VPS users typically upgrade to dedicated servers when they need more space than a VPS account provides.

Dedicated hosting accounts

Dedicated hosting accounts are for dedicated servers and are the most expensive of the options on this page. With the entire server available for your use, you decide how to set it up and use it, and you're responsible for all the sites on it, whether it's one site or dozens of sites. As with a VPS, you can install whatever software you want, but unlike a VPS, there are no users on the server other than the ones you allott space to.

A dedicated server is not just an apartment suite, floor, or even wing — it's the equivalent of leasing the entire apartment building. The property manager (the web host) is responsible for taking care of the building grounds (maintaining it in a datacenter) but may or may not be responsible for taking care of the building itself. Dedicated servers are offered as managed or unmanaged servers. If servers are managed, the web host handles all maintenance. If they're unmanaged, you're responsible for managing them or hiring a server management company to manage them.

People with dedicated hosting accounts tend to be web hosts, people who have large sites or sites with high resource needs, or others who need more than a VPS can provide.
