1 What is private domain registration?
2 How private domain registration works
3 Advantages of private domain registration
4 Disadvantages of private domain registration

1.What is private domain registration?
Private domain name registration — also called whois protection, domain name protection, privacy protected domains, domain privacy, or private whois, among other terms — is having your name, mailing address, and contact information for your domain name hidden from public view. Without private domain registration, anyone who looks up your domain name can see the personal information you provided when you registered the domain (the whois record).

2. How private domain registration works
ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) requires domain registrants to provide accurate personal information: name or company name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. This information becomes viewable and searchable online unless the domain is privacy protected.

By choosing private domain registration, the name, address, and contact details for the company providing the privacy protection service will appear in the whois record for your domain. This company will have your whois details, which you can still update at any time. Depending on the company, you may need to pay an annual fee for domain privacy protection, or it may be a free option with your domain registration.

3. Advantages of private domain registration
You won't receive spam as a result of spambots being able to harvest your email address from your public whois record.
Telemarketers won't be able to add your phone number from your whois records to their lists.
You can keep your name, contact information, and location private from everyone.
Of course, if all the information in your domain registration record is also at your website, then using private domain registration serves no purpose.

4. Disadvantages of private domain registration
Some people see businesses with private domain registration as less reputable because they've made an effort to hide information. If the domain is for a commercial site, you could lose business because of your domain being privacy protected.
For legal purposes, a privacy-protected domain may be seen as the property of the company providing the private domain registration service. This has led to legal problems on occasion.
People who need to contact you when your site is down won't be able to use your whois details to contact you.
If your whois details were ever not privacy protected, the historical records are still viewable to people who use a paid DomainTools membership for domain history records.
Some ad networks need evidence that the domain you want to advertise with is registered to you, and having private domain registration blocks the main way to identify the domain as yours.
If you transfer the domain to someone else, you might need to remove the privacy protection to do the transfer.

Domain name registrar
A domain name registrar is an organization that processes domain name registrations, renewals, transfers, and other requests on behalf of people registering domain names (registrants). Domain name registrars also maintain the information in the Whois database.

Domain name registrar accreditations
To handle gTLDs (generic top-level domains) such as those with .com, .net, and .org extensions, the registrar must be accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) are the two-letter domain extensions that represent a specific country, such as .ca (Canada), .in (India), and .uk (United Kingdom). ccTLDs are accredited by national ccTLD authorities, and the ccTLD authorities for each country have their own rules. Many domain name registrars are accredited by both ICANN and national ccTLD authorities so that they can handle both gTLDs and ccTLDs.

Domain name resellers
A domain name reseller is an individual or organization that resells domain names through a domain name registrar reseller program. Domains are still registered through the domain name registrar, but resellers can offer the domain registration services at their websites and earn a profit from each domain registered. Most web hosts are domain name resellers. In addition to being able to offer another service to their clients, web hosts can also package domain name registrations with their other services if they choose to.

Addon Domains

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hi! Readers
WordPress looks much better than Google Blogger and I created  http://nightwishmarketing.wordpress.com/
It is a free WordPress blog site (Free Web Hosting).
But it has much more restrictions than Google Blogger such as1 java scripts are not allowed 2 Adsense is not allowed 3. Aweber opt in form is not allowed etc.
So I am thinking of A. using Free web hosting which has one click installation of WordPress OR B. downloading free WordPress editor from wordpress.org and loading it to FREE Web Hosting Services.
In this case Wordpress Blog site's restrictions above do not apply.
If I create several wordpress sites hosted by others I would like to use Addon domains apart from sub domains XXXXX.domainname.com
I am not familiar with so -called "Addon Domains",but I found a very good article below.

and I am preparing for the next Wordpress adventure!!

What are addon domains?

Addon domains are domains that use the same web hosting account and resources (disk space, bandwidth, databases) as another domain. They typically point to a directory of the main website but are their own sites. They don't have their own control panel, but they have their own site stats and FTP manager. Site visitors and search engines can't detect if a website is the main site or an addon domain for an account.

Some web hosts include unlimited addon domains with their account packages, some include a set number (perhaps only one), some have fees per addon domain, and some don't include addon domains at all.

Difference between addon domains and parked domains

Addon domains and parked domains both share resources. With parked domains, however, the parked domain points to the same page that the main domain does.

Parked domains allow webmasters to direct traffic to the same site via more than one URL. Addon domains allow webmasters to have one web hosting account and more than one site on that account.

Addon domains and control panels

The ability to use addon domains depends on the control panel and the web hosting plan. cPanel and DirectAdmin, for example, include an option for addon domains. This option works only if the web host has it enabled. Some control panels don't have any methods to create addon domains.

First, verify that a web hosting account has addon domains. The next step to set up addon domains with any control panel is to point the nameservers for the addon domain to the nameservers for the main domain. Allow up to 24 hours (sometimes more) for the domain to resolve to the nameservers.

How to create an addon domain in cPanel

1. At your cPanel control panel, click on the "Addon Domains" icon and fill in the following:

1.1 The "New Domain Name" field: your addon domain (without www)
1.2 The "Subdomain/FTP Username" field: your domain without the extension (this may be   filled in automatically)
1.3The "Document Root" field: usually /public_html/youraddondomain.com (this may be filled in automatically
1.4Your password in each of the password fields

2. Click on "Add Domain," and you have your addon domain set up.

How to create an addon domain in DirectAdmin
  • At your DirectAdmin control panel, click on the "Advanced Tools" icon, then the "Host Additional Domains" icon, and then the "Add Another Domain" link.
  • Fill in your addon domain in all lower-case characters (without www).
  • Enter a bandwidth amount for this domain or check the "Same as Main Account" box.
  • Click on "Create," and you have your addon domain set up.

Domain names
Each computer on the Internet has a numeric address that acts like a telephone number, allowing each computer to find each other and talk. Mnemonic names are often used which resolve to these numeric Internet addresses, because numeric addresses are hard to remember.
Like telephone numbers, these names are broken down into hierarchical parts. A dot (.) represents the root of the hierarchy and is used as a boundary between domains (as defined in English as an area or realm under control of an entity). Below are some examples showing the hierarchy.
  • . : The root namespace
  • com. : The "com" top-level domain
  • example.com. : The "example" domain name
  • www.example.com. : The "www" host name
In the above example, "example.com" is a domain name that represents a specific domain of computers under the "com" top-level domain, and "www.example.com" is likely the web server in the "example.com" domain. The top-level domains such as ".com", ".net", and ".org" are controlled by the domain name registry, but users can register a domain name under the top-level domains in order to name the computers that they control.
The domain name registrant does not "own" the domain name but is the registered controller of it for the period of time that the domain name is registered. A domain name can be registered through a domain name registrar.

Definition of domain name servers
Every computer on the Internet has a numeric IP address (for example, 69.20.126.7) that acts like a telephone number, allowing each computer to find and talk to other computers. Because numeric addresses are hard to remember, mnemonic names that resolve or point to these numeric Internet addresses are typically used.

The mnemonic names are called domain names, and the service that resolves the names to numbers is called Domain Name Service or Domain Name System (DNS). The servers that answer queries on how to resolve these names are called domain name servers — also DNS for short, or just name servers.

Domain name servers are accessed almost time someone goes to a web page or uses email. (Websites can also be accessed via IP addresses.)

The DNS database

One person can make up to hundreds of DNS requests in a day, and since billions of people are online at any time, the DNS system is one of the largest databases in the world. It's a distributed database, meaning that the database is maintained on computers in various locations in many different countries. No single organization is responsible for it, but millions of people update it. New IP addresses and domain names are created every day and added to the billions already in existence.

How domain name servers work

DNS and web hosting

These steps make it possible for name servers to connect people to web pages:
  • Website owners register the domain names they'll be using through a domain name registrar. Domains must be currently registered.
  • When users open a web hosting account with a web hosting provider, the web hosting provider sends the clients name servers to use for their account. Name servers typically start with ns1 and ns2 and then have a domain belonging to the web host. Or the clients may have private name servers using their own domain, for example, ns1.inetinteractive.com and ns2.inetinteractive.com. These name servers have IP addresses assigned to them.
  • The web hosting clients must enter those name servers in their domain record via their domain name control panel. In other words, they need to point the domains to the name servers.
If the web hosting clients have more than one website on the same account (for example, if they have multi-domain hosting, a reseller account, or a VPS), they can set up additional domains via their web hosting and domain name control panels using the same name servers.
Domains can take up to 24 hours to propagate (be accessible from any computer connected to the Internet), but they often propagate within an hour or less.

DNS and website access

Domain name servers convert domains into IP addresses so that users can access the web pages that they're trying to reach.

A user types into a browser a URL, for example, http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki. The domain name for this page is webhostingtalk.com. When the request for the domain is made, the browser connects with a domain name server to search for the IP address for that domain. If the name server has cached the IP address for that domain, it can respond faster. If it hasn't, it connects to other name servers to try to locate the IP address for that domain. The web page will be displayed after the domain name server has successfully located the IP address for the domain.

Domain name - Web Hosting Relationship

For The Most Updated Discount Coupon Codes & My Personal Web Hosting Recommendations(though my experience is not much) ,Click http://nightwishmarketing.web.officelive.com/WebHosting.aspx
This article is repiblished, permitted by http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
I basically covered Overall picture of Web Hosting,Server and Domains so I might pick up articles for definitions of technical terms OR My recommendations of Web Hosting Companies.  Stay Tuned for next !!

So, what has the domain name to do with hosting a website? Well, there is a close relationship between your domain name and your web host (the computer where you'll host the website).

Domain name and IP relationship
The domain name is in fact a label that will redirect the visitors to the IP address of the computer where the site is hosted, so these two work in pairs.
We use this system because it's easier to remember a name rather than an IP address, which is a group of four numbers, each number between 0 and 255 (e.g. 67.72.123.201).
The domain name - IP address pair is then recorded by a DNS (Domain Name Server).
But although they are related, the website/domain name and the hosting server are two different things, so one should not confuse the domain name of a website with the hosting for that website.

 An analogy
Let's say you want to call your friends, the Smiths, to invite them over for dinner. You ask your wife to do it, as you are a little busy at the moment. She doesn't know the number by heart, so she searches for the number in the phone book and calls them.

This example almost replicates the way domain names and hosting work. The Smiths' name is the equivalent of the domain name. You didn't ask your wife to call a number; you just said to call the Smiths. Of course, the Smiths have a telephone number associated with their name; that's how you can actually reach them by phone. The telephone number is the equivalent of the IP address of the computer where the site is hosted.

The role of the phone book is also an important one. It helps you find the match: name - phone number. The phone book role is played by the DNS servers. They are a network of "phone books" that know every domain name - IP address association, so when you type a website address in your browser, you get the content of the site that is associated to that name and not the content of another site (or empty content).
To change hosting, you simply redirect the domain name to another IP and modify the DNS servers of your domain name. Of course you also need to actually move the files to the new hosting server . It's like the Smiths getting a new phone number. The name stays the same, but they can be reached by calling a different number.

Summary
When you're buying a domain name, you're buying in fact the right to redirect that URL to a web server of your choice, where your website is hosted.

Domain Name Extension - Basic Types & Options

A domain name extension is also called a top level domain name such as .com, .org, .net, and a lot more.

Domain name extension like .com is particularly intended for the commercial organizations.
.net is then designed for network services just like the Internet Service Providers or ISPs.
.org is specifically designed for non-profit organizations.
Above .com, .net, and .org – are the most common and they belong on the international front.

In terms of a country by country basis, the common domain name extensions are based on the two-character ISO country codes.
Most popular country top level domains include the .fr for France, .jp for Japan, and http://.co.uk. It is well noted that these domain name extensions are generally under the control of the government and so adding a level of stability and durability seemed so tough to match.

Besides, during the year 2000 the ICANN approved a new set of domain name extensions which is composed of seven new top domains such as .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, and .pro.
They are generally called “alternative top level domain names” and they will work in all parts of the globe.

And it is interesting to know the newest domain name extensions are .asia, .cat, .jobs, .mail, .mobi, .post, .tel, .travel.

Choosing The Right Domain Name For Your Business

When you're ready to take your business on the Internet it's imperative that you find the domain name that's perfect for your business. Some basic tips for your domain search are below.

Start your domain search with commonly used words in your business. For example, if you have an electrical supply business you should have words such as electrical, supply, electrician, power, and so on.
You'll then use these words as a basis to find a domain name that's perfect for your business.

If you have a business that has a company name/corporate then you may just want to register your business with the business name and a dot com extention. This tends to work well on business cards and in other forms of off-line advertising.

If you're planning on trying to get some traffic from the search engines you may want to go a little bit more specific with your keywords that relate to your business. You can then build your web site around these particular keywords on order to drive some free search engine traffic to your site.
There are also many different extensions that are available such as dog com, dot net, dot org and many others. The most common, and the one that you really should try to go for first, is a dot com of course.
If you buy a dot net or a dot org web site address you'll tend to find yourself explaining the fact that it's not a dot com.

It's getting harder and harder to find one that isn't already taken, but don't get discouraged, there are still many, many domain names available.

Last, but not least make sure that you use your imagination.
If you find yourself stuck, asked a friend for some suggestions.
Choosing a domain name is important for the future of your business, so take your time and find the best one that you can.
