Survey Examines Social Site Use
June 17th, 2011 By: THN News
(The Hosting News) – A new survey released by the Pew Research Center shows some interesting results about users of online social site networking sites.
To get their results, Pew surveyed over 2,000 adult participants.
Overall, Pew found that 32% of social site users are between the ages of 23 and 35, 16% are between 18 and 22, 26% are between 36 and 39, while 6% are users 65 and up.
As for as the social sites used, 92% of users have a Facebook, 29% have MySpace, 18% have a LinkedIn, while 13% use Twitter.
Since Facebook accounted for such a high percentage, the survey’s results on Facebook were particularly interesting.
Participants were asked whether they felt that most people could be trusted. Pew found that regular Facebook users are 43% more trusting than non-users.
They survey also showed Facebook users have closer relationships, are more social than others, and are more politically engaged. Also, the average Facebook user has 229 friends.

The Hosting Benefits of Webmail
June 16th, 2011 By: THN News
Web Hosting Automation Content Sponsored By: cPanel
For both hosts and website administrators, having an efficient way to communicate with others concerning all things related to their sites is important. This stands true whether it concerns potential business partners, clients, those bringing technical issues to attention, or people just commenting on your business or hosted sites.
Third party webmail services have the benefit of not requiring you to have to save all the information to your hard drive, thus saving you disk space. Being able to efficiently communicate using a simplified user interface is a must for anyone involved with hosting services. It’ll save you time and precious resources.
Unlike Email, Webmail services can also be accessed from anywhere a web browser and the Internet are available.
Besides being offered by themselves, many different hosting providers offer several types of webmail capabilities for their customers through their hosting packages.
Having a good webmail service that fits your specific needs helps any host or webmaster properly moderate his or her business or hosted sites. It’s also important to note that most of these third party clients now have easy to use mobile apps, whether they’re for Android or iOS.
Here, we examine some of the benefits and differences of 3 common third party webmail providers including Squirrel Mail, RoundCube, and Horde.
Squirrel Mail Cost: Free
First we have Squirrel Mail. It’s free and supports the majority of platforms. It’s a common webmail service that’s been around since 1999. Using HTML4, this Open Source service is compatible with the majority of web browsers.
Using plugins can help you customize your webmail service to fit your specific needs. Squirrel Mail features over 200.
Some of the useful plugins offered by Squirrel Mail are as follows: Bug Report, Reply Buttons, Secure Login, Server Settings, Download All. You can view an entire list at Squirrel Mails official site.
Also, some interesting facts about Squirrel Mail: It’s used by the Prime Minister’s office in India (India’s government cited it as more secure than Outlook). It was also featured in the movie The Social Network as being used by Mark Zuckerberg and Sean Parker.
RoundCube Cost: Free
Next we have RoundCube. Being PHP, it supports databases such as MYSQL, Postgre, and SQLite.
RoudCube is offered by top hosting companies including HostGator, Media Temple, DreamHost, and a lot of others.
Specifically designed for servers such as Apache and Lighttpd, RoundCube is available in 67 languages. It’s also capable of connecting to IMAPv4 servers.
A great feature of RoundCube is its drag and drop management of messages. In the future, RoundCube plans to make its address book based on VCard.
Like Squirrel Mail, Roundcube also features many plugins. Such examples include: Autologin, Import Messages, Captcha, Drag and Upload, Taskbar.
An interesting note, RoundCube is used as an email service at universities including Harvard and UC Berkeley.
Horde Cost: Free
Lastly we have Horde. Horde’s email service is based within Horde’s larger application framework.
It’s PHP-based as well and includes support for cPanel. It includes standard webmail features such as address book, calendar, and notes. It also features a newsreader and filter.
With the service, Horde offers an efficient mail filtering frontend known as Ingo, saving users from having to deal with unwanted messages.
Other benefits of Horde include: Quota Supports, shared IMAP folders, ZIP file compatibility, and keyboard navigation.
No matter what third party webmail service you choose to use, such services can save you time and resources, helping you command your business in a fast and efficient way.

The dos and don'ts of domain registration
Article Source : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ permitted republishing here.
The dos and don'ts of domain registration
1) Never get your domain registration from your web host. Even if it's free.
you get into a dispute with your web host and they also administer your domain registration, the web host will in all likelihood lock you out from your domains until the dispute is settled. If you have a separate registrar for your domain registrations and you get into a dispute with your web host, you can simply sign up with another web host and point your domains to their new home with little downtime. It's insurance. Well worth the couple of extra bucks a year.
2) Renew your domains before they expire.
The recommended policy is to renew your domains one month before they expire. Then, if there are any problems to iron out, you have the time to get them fixed without having to be pressurized by looming renewal and redemption dates, unresponsive registrars, etc.
3) Do your research. Read the registrar's ToS before signing up.
All registrars are not made equal. Before deciding on a registrar, you should do your research on each prospective registrar by reading forums like this one at WHT, googling for "registrars-name complaints," and by reading (and understanding) the registrar's ToS. Try them out with one domain to get the feel of how you like the control panel, checkout, etc.
4) Never do a chargeback with domains in your account.
All registrars consider a chargeback to be fraud and will suspend your entire account until it's settled. So, in the event you desire to do a chargeback, transfer all your domains out to another registrar before initiating the chargeback.
5) Don't use emails for support. Always use the registrar's ticketing system.
Emails are an unreliable form of communication with your registrar. They are easy to ignore or to get lost. Some registrars hardly ever respond to emails. Look for the registrar's ticketing system and use that instead as a direct means of communicating with your registrar. It's usually found somewhere in their help system. Expect turnaround time to be 24-48 hours and longer over a weekend or holiday. Be polite and as clear and concise as possible.
6) Be wary of deeply discounted domain registrations. There's always a catch.
It costs registrars $7.06 for .com domain registrations. Anything under $7.06 has a high risk factor. That's a whopping $0.50 for their overhead, administration, and profit.
In the words of one wise old bard, "There is no best registrar, only the best registrar for you".

The Top Ten Worst Internet Disasters
June 16th, 2011 By: THN News
Security Content Sponsored By: Trustwave
The Internet is filled with different kinds of disasters, but when it comes to unfortunate events that have an effect on users, there are several top ten worst Internet disasters. One of them is hacking; recently Sony was affected by hacking which compromised the personal information of its PlayStation online gamers.
Over seventy-seven million of its users are wondering on the exact effect of having their personal data exposed to hackers. Hackers are composed of a diverse group of people who can cause billions of dollars in damages to any program or website that they hack into.
In connection with hacking problems, here are the top ten worst virus attacks of all times that have placed internet security in question and have placed a doubt in the minds of millions of users on how safe the internet is. Somebody needs to create a patch to remedy these:
Top Ten Worst Internet Virus from the oldest to the most recent ones:
• Morris: The first Internet worm was created by Robert T. Morris. He said his goal was to gauge the size of the Internet; instead he caused an estimated damage between $10 million to $100 million.
• Melissa: Named after the creator’s favorite lap dancer, it forced major companies such as Microsoft to shut down their email gateways due to the large volume of traffic that this virus generated.
• VBS/ Loveletter: This virus originated from the Philippines and managed to spread worldwide in a single day to infect computer email address by sending large numbers of messages. It has caused an estimated $5.5 billion in damage as both corporate and government email systems, causing them to shut down to eradicate the virus.
• Code Red started running in the Microsoft IIS Web Server: Defaced websites through its text “HELLO”. It has caused an estimated of $2.6 billion and has not stopped its major disruption in connectivity up to this point time.
• Nimda: This caused more than $635 million in damage since it had a more damaging effect than Code Red.
• SQL Slammer; It made the distribution of duplicates of itself in the world causing the denials of service and the slowing down of the entire Internet.
• MS Blaster: This virus spread through Windows operating systems, specifically targeting the Windows update services.
• MyDoom: This virus quickly spread by purportedly sending an email message with an attachment that when opened will send email copies of the virus to those who are listed in the victim’s address book.
• Sasser: This virus affected transatlantic flights.
• Witty; The first worm to attack network protected software, IBM specifically. The main effect is that it has proven that a worm can affect a population of machines and networks who think that they are properly secured.
Some people believe that the worst bugs are those who can cause fatalities. Coming up with a list of bugs that have wreaked havoc is not that hard, but it is hard to note the severity of their effect. One has to choose between what can be worse between breaches in internet security, because of a computer worm which can cause the Internet to shut down for a few days or a typo that can trigger the crash of the phone system of a country. The choice is for each person to make since each one knows which is most important for him or her, like making a phone call or accessing email.
Since most of those who use the internet are members of several websites, we will now talk about the worst password practices. This is the reason why hackers can sometimes hack your online bank accounts and other personal data. Experts suggest that users adopt passwords with eight characters mixing them with upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. The key is a password that is simple yet easily remembered by the user (but cannot be easily figured out by the hacker).
The Top Ten Commonly Used Passwords:
• A simple stream of numbers 123456
• Second is 12345
• Third is 123456789
• Password
• Iloveyou
• Princess
• Rockyou
• 1234567
• 12345678
• abc123
Remember not to use your name in your password as this easily cracked by hackers. It is good to mix up a word with numbers and even make them case sensitive. Finally, technology should not be totally blamed for all of the mishaps on the Internet. The Internet can either be your friend or your foe depending on how you choose to use it. For those who make an honest to goodness living on the Internet, being the victim of such disasters can affect their source of livelihood and the future of their family who depend on them as well. We need to learn how to guard ourselves from such unavoidable occurrences. One never knows what exactly runs in the mind of those who attempt at making mischief for people and corporations. They alone can answer the root of their personal reasons.

Domain name appraisals
Article Source : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ permitted republishing here.
Domain name appraisals
A domain name is worth what someone will pay for it. A domain that looks valuable on paper is worth what it appears to be worth only if someone is willing to pay that amount for it. On the other hand, a domain that doesn't look valuable at all may be valuable to someone who is willing to pay a lot for that domain. The value of a domain is what it's worth to someone else, and that value is often dependent on the revenue that the domain can help generate. While no one can assign an exact value to a domain until someone has paid for it, the following criteria are commonly used to determine a domain's general worth. Having a combination of positive factors usually increases a domain's value.
Contents
|
Domain length
Shorter is better, and shorter domains almost certainly cost more than longer domains. Short domains are easier to type, remember, and fit on business cards and other promotional materials.Memorability
Short or longer domains have increased value if they're easy to remember. One-word domains, for example, can be very valuable. A domain that can be easily pronounced is easier to remember than one that can't be easily pronounced, so being pronounceable is a related factor.
TLD
A dot com (.com) TLD or extension is generally considered to be the most valuable extension. If your domain is a dot net (.net) extension, for example, you risk losing traffic to the dot com extension variation of that domain if it points to a different website.Domains with country-specific domain extensions are valuable for websites catering to traffic from the specific country. Because they're country-specific, however, their value is generally limited to what they're worth within that country.
Domain age
Search engines tend to give more weight to older domains, and people who know how to check when a domain was registered often consider a website more credible if it's been in existence for a few years. For this reason, some domain buyers look for already-registered domains that can be purchased and transferred to them.Domain keywords
While one-word domains are extremely popular, domains with two words, possibly even three words, can still be valuable if those words together have commercial value. Keywords relevant to an emerging product or trend give the domain increased value.Hyphens and numbers
Hyphens in domains reduce their value. The hyphen is often forgotten and people go to the non-hyphenated version of the domain instead. Also, anyone can take a two-word domain, insert a hyphen between the words, and register it as a new domain. That doesn't make it a valuable domain.Domains with numbers are generally less valuable too. As above, anyone can take an existing domain, add a number or two to it, and register it as a new domain. It can look like a cheaper version of the original domain. Also, when hearing a domain with a number in it, listeners don't know whether to write the domain as a number (e.g. "2") or as a word ("two" or "to"). In cases where the numbers add meaning to the domain, such as a relevant year, they're less likely to detract from the domain's value.
Domain history
Was the domain previously used for a popular, reputable site? The domain value goes up. Was it used for a site with questionable content, or was it used to send spam? The value goes considerably down.Backlinks
Quality backlinks that are relevant to what the new domain owner wants the site to be about add value. If the backlinks aren't relevant to the intended purpose of the site, or if they're of poor quality, they don't add value to a domain.Brandability
Can a domain name be a marketable name for a company or product? If so, its potential value increases.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Keyword terminology
Article Source : http://www.webhostingtalk.com/ permitted republishing here.Keyword Terminology
This page lists and defines terms used when discussing keywords for search engine optimization (SEO). For a definition of keywords and how to research and choose keywords, see Keywords.Contents
|
Keyword competition
Keyword competition is the number of web pages that are optimized for or that appear in search results for a particular keyword. For example, "web host" has about 9,950,000 results in Google with quotation marks and about 28,100,000 results without quotation marks. The keyword competition is very high for this keyword. More specific keywords have less competition. Example: "Australia ecommerce web host" has only one result with quotation marks and about 272,000 results without them.Keyword density
Keyword density refers to how often a keyword is used relative to the rest of the text on the page. A 500-word page with a keyword used five times, for example, will have a higher keyword density than a 1200-word page with a keyword used 10 times. Keyword density is often expressed as the ratio of the keyword to the total number of words on the page.A higher keyword density is not always better. Search engines may label a page with a very high keyword density as having keyword stuffing instead.
Keyword frequency
Keyword frequency is similar to keyword density except that it refers to the frequency (number of times) that a keyword is used on this page. For example, the word keyword is used very frequently on this page (but because of the word's keyword popularity, this page is not likely to appear early in search results for just the word keyword).Keyword frequency is one of the factors that search engines use to determine a page's relevancy for that keyword. Be careful to avoid keyword stuffing, however.
Keyword matching
Keyword matching is how keywords that advertisers bid on interact with search queries. There are four types of keyword matching:- Broad match: your ad can appear with search results for one or more words in the query as well as for singular/plural forms, synonyms, other relevant variations, and for the words in a different order. For example, if you bid on a broad match for domain names, your ad could appear with search result for domain names, domain name, name domain, and domain, among other variations. A broad match is the default option.
- Phrase match: your ad can appear with search results for your term in quotation marks. For example, "domain names" could appear with domain names and .in domain names but not for domain name or domain .in names.
- Exact match: your ad can appear only with results for the exact keyword or keyword phrase that you indicate with brackets around it. Example: [domain names] could appear only with results for domain names, not for any of the other examples listed in this section.
- Negative keyword: your ad will not appear with search results that include terms you list as negative keywords. If you specify that your ad is to appear with search results for domain names except for search results that include the search term free, free is your negative keyword.
Keyword phrase
A keyword phrase (also called key phrase) is a phrase of two or more keywords that's used for search engine optimization. For example, a page at a web hosting website might be optimized for the keyword phrase small business web host or dedicated game servers, as well as for other keyword phrases.Keyword phrases are often just called keywords along with their single-word counterparts.
Keyword popularity
Keyword popularity refers to how many web pages have the keyword. For example, a Google search for "web hosting" (with the quotation marks) produces "about 131,000,000" results. Web hosting is a very popular keyword.Keyword prominence
Keyword prominence is the prominence of keywords on a page. Keywords are more prominent in these locations:- The title element
- The <h1> and other heading tags
- Near the top of the page
- Near the start of sentences
- In alt tags
Keyword proximity
Keyword proximity refers to how close two keywords are to each other on a web page. Search engines give weight to the closeness of keywords. The keyword phrase dedicated hosting server, for example, is given much more weight as a keyword phrase than the three words would have if they were separated by other words.Keyword research
Keyword research is the process of researching keywords that will bring targeted traffic to each page at your site. See How to research keywords.Keyword-rich pages
Keyword-rich pages have a high keyword density and have good keyword prominence. In other words, their content is full of keywords in key places.Keyword stuffing
Keyword stuffing is overusing a keyword to increase the keyword density for that keyword on its page. Example: "Our cheap dedicated servers are the best. We specialize in cheap dedicated servers. We've been providing cheap dedicated servers since we went into business to provide cheap dedicated servers two years ago. To read more about cheap dedicated servers, click on the cheap dedicated servers link." Repeating the same keyword out of context is also keyword stuffing.Keyword stuffing can (but shouldn't) be done in these places:
- On the page where visitors read it (as in the above example), including in the heading tags
- As hidden text by making it the same color as the page background
- In the page meta tags
- In the page alt tags
- In the page title element
